HERE ARE SOME INTERESTING COMPARISONS:-
I couldn't' stop making this comparison..
inches of rain in new orleans due to hurricane katrina... 18
inches of rain in mumbai (July 27th).... 37.1
* Its not only abt inches of rain. USA experienced a hurricane not a downpour like Bombay. What screwed New Orleans was the levees breaking down which kept the seawater out since most of NO is below sea level.
population of new orleans... 484,674
population of mumbai.... 12,622,500
* Yes more ppl were affected by Mumbai rain. argument accepted.
deaths in new orleans within 48 hours of katrina...100
deaths in mumbai within 48hours of rain.. 37.
* deaths in NO would be in thousands after all the water receeds. Again one can't compare a storm to a hurricane.
number of people to be evacuated in new orleans... entire city..wohh
number of people evacuated in mumbai...10,000
* This tells me that the metereology dept in US forebode the disaster and ppl headed to the advice.
Cases of shooting and violence in new orleans...Countless
Cases of shooting and violence in mumbai.. NONE
* Americans have a right to firearms and the hurricane cut off all basic supplies and americans who are used to getting things easily took the easy way out - grabbing whatever they could lay their hands on. When someone stopped them they started shooting them. Indians were not as badly affected and they are used to such situations where the basic necessities are cut off- bandhs, riots.
Time taken for US army to reach new orleans... 48hours
Time taken for Indian army and navy to reach mumbai...12hours
* Argument accepted
status 48hours later...new orleans is still waiting for relief, army and electricty
status 48hours later..mumbai is back on its feet and is business is as usual
* water receeded back in Mumbai after 48 hrs but not on New Orleans since the water has to be pumped out and the levees need to be rebuilt. As I mentioned before, its like comparing apples with oranges.
USA...world's most developed nation
India...JUST A DEVELOPING NATION..
oopss...did i get the last fact wrong??? Or am I just being proud
of being an INDIAN?
* I am not belittling the efforts of mumbaikars here but just wanted to tell you that the email author is an idiot.

My Opinion... and I agree, the author is an idiot
- New Orleans got hit by a hurricane. Mumbai got hit by Monsoon rains.
- Winds caused as much damage as the water.
- New Orleans is below sea level, protected by 4 levees. Mumbai is at sea level.
- 2 levees broke, under intense pounding by the winds and water, causing most of the flooding, not so much the rain.
- To actually understand the force of 100mph + winds, one has to be there, hence loss of power and water lines. Doubt any living Mumbaikar has seen that kind of force of nature there.
- Being under sea level, the water cannot recede, hampering relief efforts.
- Both situations are tragedies on a massive scale, comparing them for self indulgent nation-bashing never works. Get over yourself.
- Getting back to work asap is a testament to the spirit of Mumbai. Working towards rehabilitating the affected is a testament to both nations.
- By all accounts, New Orleans is practically destroyed, not something to rub in anyone's face about.
Apoo
Exactly what I felt... One couldn't have put it better. :)
WTF is wrong with u guys, EVERY ONE INCLUDING ME IS AN IDIOT TO READ SUCH MAILS/COMPARISONS. Instead of reading these mails, use that time to help some one in need.
please delete this stupid comparison.
This comparision is currently being circulated via email. I have just given my views as to why this comparision dosen't hold water (I have not written this comparision - if that is what you think)
I think posting this comparison in a blog is foolish enough (with views or without views)! Its so lame to give comments to a comparison made by some 12-year old nerd who has not realised the gravity of both situations.
Yep I know its someone who is dosen't know much about the topic but if some false propoganda is being circulated I think it has to be rectified. I started this blog to post my views on topics which I feel are handled incorrectly and will continue to do so irrespective of what you think.
Hi
I disagree with your blog. Check how people are so unhappy with handling of NO's situation (both from Indian and US perspective).

I think not only the email author but also you are an idiot. It is indeed pathetic that people want to compare two human tragedies. The only thing worse than making such comparisons is to respond to such idiocy.
